Course Overview

Point Avenue’s Middle & High School Debate (Beginner) is a course that aims to nurture future leaders and their ability to think critically, collaborate, express and share their ideas in a powerful manner. Throughout the term, students will be exposed to a variety of debating styles, with a particular focus on World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) and Asian Parliamentary (AP) formats.

Course Objectives

  • Define the purpose and structure of competitive Parliamentary Debating
  • Express their opinions using the Argumentation and Refutation structure
  • Distinguish the different roles and responsibilities of the First, Second, Third, and Reply Speaker
  • Utilize two brainstorming techniques in generating ideas: the Need Practicality Impact (NPI) Analysis and Stakeholder Analysis
  • Collaborate with their classmates in a tournament structure

  • Debate For All - Introduction to Debate: explores the basics of the academic sport of debate to include 21st-Century Skills, parliamentary debate format, argumentation, refutation, speaker roles, and methods of brainstorming
