Course Overview

Designed for students who have a moderate grasp of English language fundamentals involving reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students at this level can communicate in English with some fluency, requiring some corrections and prompting. The goal is to improve articulation, word choice, comprehension and speaking/written fluidity. Focus will be placed on appropriate grammatical conventions and vocabulary expansion. Pathways is National Geographic Learning's new five-level academic skills series that features reading & writing and listening & speaking strands to help learners develop the language skills needed to achieve academic success. Learners develop academic literacy skills through content, images and video from National Geographic. This innovative series provides learners with a pathway to success!

Course Objectives

  • Our ELA courses help students master the essential skills required for high school, college, career, and life in today’s global economy through adhering to United States Common Core Standards. Students advance through the four levels of ELA from Foundations to ELA Advanced. Students will be placed based on a diagnostic assessment which focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening proficiency.
  • The ELA standards align with college expectations in 6 domains
    1) Language (conventions, knowledge, vocabulary)
    2) Reading: Informational (ideas, details, structure, range, text complexity)
    3) Reading: Literature (ideas, details, structure, range, text complexity)
    4) Reading: Foundational (concepts, phonological awareness, recognition, fluency)
    5) Speaking and Listening (comprehension, collaboration, presentation)
    6) Writing (type, purpose, production, distribution, research, range of writing)
